In 1951 DECCA recorded the entire first Ring Cycle under Knappertsbusch for potential commercial release. Unfortunately their equipment experienced technical problem during the first three operas, and the material no longer exists. The excellent recording of Götterdämmerung slumbered for decades unreleased in the DECCA archives, until Testament released them in 1999. Obviously that was a technical challenge, since it had to be cobbled together from many tapes, each of which was pitched slightly different. Act 1 was relatively consistent, only a little flat (at times more, at times less), but acts 2 and 3 were quite bad: pitch ranged from a=437 Hz to a=446 Hz. At one point, in Gutrune's act 3 scene, pitch jumped from 437 to 443 from one moment to the next. I've ironed out all the inconsistencies from the poorly aligned tapes, and now the performance is for the first time available in authentic pitch (which in Bayreuth was a=445 Hz in 1951.)
