A recent panel of 14 international medical experts, led by Dr. Shoo Lee, Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, has challenged the evidence that led to the conviction of nurse Lucy Letby. Letby was found guilty of murdering seven newborns and attempting to kill seven others at the Countess of Chester Hospital. The panel's findings suggest that the infants' deaths were due to natural causes or substandard medical care, rather than deliberate harm by Letby. In light of these findings, Letby's legal team has submitted an application to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), seeking a review of her convictions. The CCRC will assess whether this new evidence presents a real possibility that the convictions would not be upheld if referred to the Court of Appeal. If the CCRC determines that the new evidence is compelling, it can refer the case to the Court of Appeal. The court would then decide whether to quash the convictions or order a retrial.
