The University of British Columbia’s 18-storey Brock Commons student residence is the tallest wood building in the world – a uniquely designed mass timber superstructure that exceeds what the BC Building Code had never contemplated, let alone regulated. The B.C government facilitated the development of the site-specific building regulation for the construction of the 18-storey wood tower. This leading-edge approach is a bold step forward for the B.C government and a means to facilitate future innovative regulations under the Building Act.
