The metropolis below the water is no less bustling. Angelfish, butterflyfish, wrasse, tangs, and clownfish browse the Great Barrier Reef’s buffet, battling for food and elbow (shall we say fin?) room, while turtles and whales glide overhead. Creatures pass by in the form of different themes and textures, and it is up to the listener to imagine who is who. The middle section offers a contrast to the wonder and delight of the opening with a sly, foreboding theme, in which reef sharks rest on the sand flats and moray eels in their dens, preparing to hunt by night. Nearby fish cautiously continue with their affairs, knowing the danger is not immediate, and soon the reef’s predators pass to the back of our minds, overshadowed by dramas of damselfish and pageants of parrotfish. City Under the Coral Sea is a celebration of one of the most spectacular, diverse, and endangered living communities on Earth. It is my attempt to express in music the awe of seeing a coral reef for the first time, whether on a scuba venture or on Blue Planet. It is my hope that a bit of that wonder and respect may take root in the heart of the listener. --- Founded in 1946, Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras (MCYO) of Strathmore is the oldest and most established youth orchestra program in the Washington, DC area, and is highly regarded as one of the country’s most outstanding programs.
