Checking a Carrier Heat Pump Charge in Heat

Jesse shows his process of checking the charge of a Carrier heat pump in heat mode when the outdoor temp is below 65 degrees. Checking the charge of a heat pump in cool mode is ideal, but it's not always practical when the ambient temperature is low. When we check the charge in heat mode, we must compare our temperatures and pressures to the values on the manufacturer's charts (in this case, we look at Carrier's charts). First, you hook your low-pressure gauge to the common suction port. You can't check your liquid line temperature at the condensing unit in heat mode, as there's flash gas instead of subcooled liquid. However, you can hook up your high-pressure gauge to the "suction" port, which is really your discharge port in heat mode. After letting the unit run for a little bit, we compare our temperatures and pressures to our Carrier charging chart. You select the unit type based on tonnage (24 equals a 2-ton unit because 24/12=2), and then you select the indoor dry-bulb temperature. Then, at the top, you find your outdoor temperature. See where the two intersect, and you should find your desired pressure readings. Compare that to the readings you received on your gauges or probes.
