In this episode, we share news from the Tokyo game show where Hyperkin has teased the Retron GX, a clone console compatible with TurboGrafx and PC Engine Games This is a developing story, news and features may break after the posting of this. Official Press release: Gaming Hardware Developer Hyperkin Demos Console for PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16 at Tokyo Game Show September 15th, 2022 (Los Angeles, Calif.) A playable prototype console, the RetroN GX, is on display at Tokyo Game Show (Sept. 15 - Sept. 18) for demo: Hall 6 at the TASSEI booth (6-N01). It is compatible with PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16 games. Tentative Features List: • Compatible with PC Engine (HuCard) / TurboGrafx-16 (TurboChip) • HD output • Aspect Ratio Switch (4:3 / 16:9) • Specialist controller • Controller ports for TurboGrafx-16 (w/ PC Engine adapter) Hyperkin is a Los Angeles-based video game hardware developer, known to make unique and nostalgic products for both retro and modern gamers. More details, including release date and MSRP, are coming soon. @Harimoto_AR posted several interesting images to Twitter from the Tokyo game show on September the 15th, 2022. The images that he shared were rather interesting, showing off signage for a new, yet unannounced Hyperkin console called the Retron GX. The signage indicated that this system will be capable of playing both TurboGrafx16 Turbo Chips and PC Engine HuCards. We reached out to Hyperkin USA for comment and they did confirm that this is something in development. We have no details regarding availability, pricing, or anything along those lines. But we do have a press release that confirms some of the information. We also have the sign from the show to get information from as well. According to the placard at the show, the Retron GX will feature a first for Hyperkin, a 1080p output. Their previous systems have been locked at 720p and, while better than 480p, still not as good as 1080p. We are thrilled to see this update. We also see that the Retron GX will feature controller ports and USB ports, something extremely exciting! You can use either their own Specialist controller, which looks like one is included, or you can use other third-party USB controllers. Pretty exciting. It appears that the Retron GX will be compatible with both HuCards and TurboChips, but no confirmation regarding accessories such as the Turbo CD. We also don't have information yet regarding the video output, is it just HDMI, is it composite, or is it component? We hope to know more in the coming weeks and days.
