If you have a chubby face or feel your cheeks look fuller than you’d like, this procedure can help create a slimmer, more defined, and model-like look. In this detailed video, Dr. Ankit Gupta, Plastic Surgeon at Panache Aesthetics, Delhi, explains everything you need to know about Buccal Fat Removal Surgery — from what buccal fat actually is, to who the right candidates are, how the procedure is performed, recovery time, expected results, and long-term effects. 🔹 What is Buccal Fat? Buccal fat (also called Bichat’s fat pad) is a naturally occurring fat pocket inside the cheeks, located just beneath the cheekbone and in front of the chewing muscles. It helps maintain fullness in the face. However, in some people, this fat can make the face appear round or chubby even if the rest of the body is slim. When buccal fat is surgically removed, the mid-face becomes more sculpted, cheekbones appear more prominent, and the jawline looks sharper. This gives the face a slimmer and more youthful contour. 🔹 Who is the Ideal Candidate? ✅ People with round, chubby, or fuller faces ✅ Those who want a more sculpted, defined, “model-like” look ✅ Patients who are otherwise fit and healthy ✅ No active mouth infections or oral issues ❌ Not suitable for people with very slim, narrow, or elongated faces (as it may make the face look hollow) ❌ Not ideal for people with saggy skin or significant skin laxity ❌ Not for those with ongoing medical problems that may interfere with healing 🔹 How is Buccal Fat Removal Performed? The surgery usually takes 30 minutes under local anesthesia (no need for general anesthesia in most cases). A small 2 cm incision is made inside the mouth (no external scars). Buccal fat is carefully teased out — usually 4–6 ml per side. The incision is closed with dissolvable stitches. The procedure is minimally invasive, scarless, and quick. 🔹 Is the Surgery Painful? Most patients describe it as mild discomfort, not pain. You remain awake under local anesthesia, but the area is numb. You may feel pressure but not pain during the procedure. Recovery is similar to dental work — slight swelling for 2–3 days. 🔹 Recovery & Aftercare Swelling lasts 2–4 days, similar to a dental extraction. Apply ice packs and sleep with head elevated for faster healing. Day 1: clear liquids (water, coconut water, lemon water). Day 2: liquid diet. Day 3 onwards: soft solids and normal food. Return to work: usually within 2–3 days. Final results: visible after 2–3 months once swelling completely resolves. 🔹 What Results Can You Expect? A subtle yet noticeable improvement in facial definition. Cheekbones and jawline appear sharper and more prominent. Face looks slimmer, like you have naturally lost weight. The results are permanent — buccal fat does not regrow. 🔹 Can Buccal Fat Removal Be Combined With Other Procedures? Yes. To enhance results, buccal fat removal is often combined with: Double chin liposuction (to sharpen the jawline) Chin implant or filler (to create a stronger chin) Facelift or neck lift surgery (for aging patients) Fat grafting (to balance facial volume if needed) 🔹 Risks & Safety When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, it is a very safe surgery. Minor risks: temporary swelling, rare chance of bleeding, or injury to nearby salivary duct (extremely uncommon and preventable).
