I used my putty-knife knife to make a bow drill set out of scrap 2”x 6”. While going for the ember and 70 strokes in, I noticed no charring on the spindle tip and divot. Indeed it was just polishing the 2 surfaces. So I dropped a pinch of sand in the divot. It immediately ground through the polish and started making charred dust. Getting the ember, I gave it a long time to coalesce in all this humidity, and gently blew pine needles into flames… in the garage. Lol! SC still has a burn ban and there are to be no outdoor fires.
