Massacre Rocks Area and Register Rock, Idaho Road Trip Part 1 - Oregon Trail History

I took a road trip through Southern Idaho with my family and we stopped at Massacre Rocks State Park, Massacre Rocks Rest Area (the BEST rest area in the US!) and Register Rock. The entire area is filled with Oregon Trail history and stunning Snake River scenery. We begin at the rest area with a trail to scenic overlooks and Oregon Trail history. Then we visit Massacre Rocks State Park, so named because emigrants coming from the Missouri River valley to settle in Oregon in hopes of finding a new life worried about how the trail narrowed in between a rocky area and worried about attacks by Native Americans. One such skirmish near, but not actually at the park, left 8-10 emigrants dead and 20 Shoshone Indians dead. The park has a multitude of recreational activities including camping, trails, water sports and disc golf. There is a great little visitor's center with Oregon Trail information and a few souvenirs. We then drove to Register Rock, a large rock now covered with a shelter and protected with a fence that shows graffiti from the Oregon Trail emigrants that carved their name and date into the rock face. One of the more interesting carvings was done by a 7-year-old who carved and Indian head and a preacher's head and signed it.
