Justice Denied: Inside Liberia’s Overcrowded Prisons

In Monrovia Central Prison in Liberia was built for 374 inmates today, it holds over 1,300. Overcrowding is so severe that detainees sleep in shifts. Amid this crisis, the Detainees Justice Action Collaboration is working to change the system. This team of lawyers, advocates, and data collectors is building a database of pre-trial detainees and fighting to end arbitrary detention. Their findings are alarming: more than 95% of pre-trial detainees are held beyond Liberia’s legal limits. Since April 2023, their work has helped release over 180 people and they’re not stopping.
