Looking to get into Night Vision Setups, and know nothing about them or how to use Night Vision Goggles, IR Lasers, and other Night Visions gear? Well then, I just found the PERFECT class for you! Last month we had the opportunity to attend a two day night vision operator class provided to us by Jawless Hog Tactical and HRT. It was a great experience and I couldn’t recommend them enough. Whether it was the material covered, the trainer’s ability to teach, skill building, laughs, this class had it all. Most importantly, the environment created by the instructor’s was conducive for learning and welcoming to beginners, civilians and folks with extensive professional training backgrounds. We began with a classroom portion which covered nomenclature associated with night vision operations. As someone with an above average training background, I had zero experience with night vision ops. Nick and Chris of Jawless Hog Tactical were the chief instructors and gave us the tools to succeed from their vast law enforcement and military experience. Whether it was the dual tube LLUL-21 Low Light Innovations NODs or the Steiner DBAL on my rifle, I had no idea how to utilize these expensive tools. Nick and Chris of Jawless Hog Tactical showed us how to set up the and mount the IR laser/illuminator on the rifle and attach our NVGs to the helmet. For folks without night vision or a laser aiming module (LAM), there was gear to rent or on loan for the class. Most importantly, no one was left out. Day one was all about learning our gear, how to catch a tennis ball while learning depth perception under night vision and finished with zeroing our LAMs. The zero method chosen was a parallel zero, while others could have chosen converging or infinity zero. Day two would bring movement drills around others with firearms, carry positions, and muzzle awareness. Most importantly, the muzzle before meat concept was emphasized and civilians with no experience of firearms movement around others were involved and taught key aspects of safety. I really appreciated this portion of the class because the average person has never done this and we completed it in the daylight before later doing it under the cover of darkness with NVG. Shooting and moving under NODs with various weapon transition drills were incorporated. We shot under white light numerous times and the HRT AWLS rifle light allowed me to have fast target ID at night. Learning how to shoot under our night vision, flip them up and then back down to shoot with IR lasers was such a cool experience. Nick and Chris helped bring the night vision operations into perspective. They talked about how night vision could relate to real life scenarios and its usage implications. Many people without real world experience get wrapped up into military usage standards for night vision and IR lasers, yet they never talk about what that looks like for civilians or law enforcement. Jawless Hog Tactical talked about what someone can identify or not identify at different distances and how important white light illumination is for night vision operations in a civilian or law enforcement scenario. The class covered a whirlwind of information related to night vision operations. I left the class able to shoot proficiently with night vision around other people, on the move, through a VTAC wall and even tested the skill set at the end with a friendly competition. Whether a student was a 20 year law enforcement veteran with years of training or a electrical engineer with no formal training, something was learned and gained from the class. I cannot recommend the class enough for someone new to night vision or even a moderate user looking to improve their skill set. Training when taught by competent instructors, like Nick or Chris from Jawless Hog Tactical, always has a benefit. As always, I look for more training down the road and especially more training with the first class folks at Jawless Hog Tactical.
