Please leave a comment... || VIDEO TRANSCRIPTION || Hi and hello. Welcome to Episode 20 of the Facilitator Tips video series. My name is Mark Collard, I’m an experiential trainer and author, and in this series I share those little nuggets of wisdom about what I’ve learned through the journey of facilitation in my career. And today I want to talk about this little tip about seeking feedback, indeed seeking feedback all the time. One of the most hardest things we can do, in fact it’s built into that little thing that was produced by Robert Fulghum, everything I learned I learned in kindergarten (All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten), it talked about one of the biggest words was “look”. It is one of the hardest things we do as a human being is to look, because sometimes we’re afraid of what we might see. And that’s what feedback is about. It’s inviting someone else to actually look at what we’re doing, to observe and provide basically a mirror or at least their opinion of what they saw. And because of that it is actually very challenging, because sometimes we don’t want to hear what that feedback or what other people think. Now of course feedback is just that. It doesn’t have to change you. You get to choose what you do with it but we need to appreciate that it is challenging but also appreciate that without challenge you’re left with boredom and routine. The only way you can grow as a professional in this space when you’re leading groups is to be able to seek feedback, to be able to understand what you could do better. Even just in this video I have my friend Shar with me, and in an earlier episode discovered something that I said I completely missed, and that we could’ve then put live and I would’ve been embarrassed. It wasn’t until we went back and listened to it again we realised oh my goodness, I’ve said the wrong thing. So even now, even in this space I’m looking for feedback. You can’t do it all the time. We just don’t simply have that time, but please do and that would be my last minute tip. Somewhere in the next 24 hours just ask a friend, a colleague, someone trusted about hey, what do you think, or did this go okay or do you have something you can contribute, and that is a wonderful way to be able to strengthen relationships because guess what, they might ask the same of you as well.
