The song was released on the 1986 collaborative album ''Class Of '55: Memphis Rock & Roll Homecoming''. It was written by Randy Bachman, who is also known for the hit "Hey! Baby". While the 1986 version is the primary studio recording, Jerry Lee Lewis recorded an unissued solo version during the Caribou Ranch sessions in 1980. He was also known to perform it live as early as 1981. A live recording of Jerry Lee Lewis performing the song solo appears on the album ''Live From Austin, Texas'', recorded for Austin City Limits. The song features typical rockabilly themes, including metaphors about car engines and speed. Jerry Lee Lewis's performance often includes his signature "pumping piano" style and ad-libs where he refers to himself as "The Killer" or "Jerry Lee".
