My friend Gustavo commissioned me to make him this custom leather journal cover, featuring an excerpt of a quote by Anaïs Nin. You can find the full quote here: / we-write-to-heighten-our-own-awareness-of-... The journal cover is made to accept moleskine cahier journals (5 "x 8.25"). It is made from 5-6 oz veg tan leather, and the inner flaps are made from some scrap suede pieces. Suede is perfect for the inner flaps, as it is thin and flexible, and you can get a nice burnish on the edges along with the veg tan edges. I used my 3D Printer to create custom embossing stamps for the quote, Gustavo's initials and my maker's mark. The stamps are printed in PLA, with 100% infill. These made a really nice impression in the damp leather with just a moderate amount of clamping pressure held for a couple minutes. I decided to hand carve the tree with my swivel knife, and I love the contrast between the clean, modern font of the quote and the more natural tree carving, which is visibly made with human hands. The journal cover is oiled with neatsfoot oil and finished with carnauba creme. Everything is held together with contact cement and saddle stitching. I burnished the edges with gum tragacanth, and then did a final burnishing pass with beeswax. Links to all of these products are below! I really love how this journal cover turned out. One of my favorite things about leaving veg tan leather undyed is how dramatically the leather darkens over time as it's used and develops a patina. Though the journal cover is currently a warm, medium beige, this color will gradually approach a dark, rich brown (it will change color faster the more it's used and exposed to the elements). Veg tan really does age like a fine wine! I'll get some pictures from Gustavo of the journal cover in a year or so and post them to my Instagram page, so make sure you're following me over there! I love making custom journal covers and other leather goods. If you are interested commissioning a one-of-a-kind piece, feel free to send me an email at morleykert@gmail.com.
