Skylar Soutter, 11, was on her way home from the school bus stop when her sister Shae, 7, began choking and couldn't breathe. The little girl had a piece of hard candy lodged in her throat. "I was scared. I thought I was going to die," Shae told News 2. A quick-thinking Skylar jumped into action, relying on the skills she learned in school, to rush to Shae's aid. She performed an abdominal thrust maneuver to dislodge the candy. Skylar learned the technique through First Aid and CPR training she received last month as part of a robotics program at West Creek Middle School in Clarksville. She knew exactly how to react. Skylar told News 2 she was nervous but knew that she had to stay calm and not panic under pressure. "You kind of get frightened but you're supposed to stay calm. That way you don't lose control of the situation," she said. The girls' mother, Christy Soutter, said she is proud of her daughter and grateful for the instructor who taught the First Aid class. "Hopefully, we can get the word out to more parents to get kids trained. Everyone needs to get trained," said Norman Ressler with Breath of Life CPR Plus. Teachers learned Tuesday about another student, in addition to Skylar, who took the class and also saved the life of a family member.
