Learning Objectives: Review the definition and classification of frailty Discuss how frailty impacts Patients across the spectrum of kidney disease Discuss how frailty may be used in decision making for patients with kidney disease Dr. Karthik Tennankore is a nephrologist and professor of medicine at Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada). He received his MD at the University of Western Ontario and completed a two-year clinical fellowship in home dialysis at the Toronto General Hospital (University of Toronto), while concurrently obtaining a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology through Harvard University. His clinical interests are mainly focused in the areas of home hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. His research is focused on studying and improving outcomes of dialysis patients (including those on home dialysis) and kidney transplant recipients, with a focus on how frailty impacts health outcomes for patients with kidney disease. More recently he has been embarking on innovative research in machine learning for risk prediction and novel approaches to measuring cognitive function in dialysis patients. In addition, he is the current executive committee co-chair for the Canadian Nephrology Trials Network (CNTN) and Research Network Committee co-lead for the Accelerating Clinical Trials (ACT) consortium.
