PM Abe and his wife welcome Dutch royals and official delegation

(30 Oct 2014) King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Akie Abe in Tokyo on Thursday. At the outset of the meeting, Abe welcomed the royal couple, noting the close ties and historic relations between the Dutch royal family and the Japanese imperial family. King Willem-Alexander said he hoped his visit will be a step forward in a shared future between the two countries. He also commented that he was particularly interested in cooperating in areas of agriculture, ageing societies, as well as alternative energy. The King and Queen were welcomed by the Japanese Emperor and Empress, Akihito and Michiko, as well as Crown Prince and Princess Naruhito and Masako on Wednesday. They have also been meeting with the local Dutch community and business leaders during their 4-day stay, which will continue through Friday. This is the first time King Willem-Alexander has visited Japan since his coronation last April in Amsterdam.
