In 2007, I took a class at the University of Hawaii at Manoa called Freaks and Monsters, which completely changed my life. The official course description goes as follows: An interdisciplinary examination of corporeal Otherness. Unusual real and fictional bodies from fairground history, art, anatomy, literature, natural history, and ethnology. Discussion of the moral, medical, philosophical, and aesthetic dilemmas of spectacular difference. For my final paper, I wrote an analysis of the "freakery of Spider-Man", which convinced my professor that it was A-worthy. Almost 20 years later, let's see how it holds up.
