The neighbor who found Dan Markel shot in the head in his car testified as the first witness in Donna Adelson's trial today (Friday, August 22, day 1) in Leon County Circuit Court in Tallahassee, Florida. James Geiger said he was in his living room with his "doing something with our iPads" when he heard noise that turned out to be gunfire. Adelson is accused of conspiring with her son, Charlie Adelson, to hire hitmen to kill Markel in July 2014. Markel was 41 when he was shot in the head early on July 18, 2014, after dropping the two sons he shared with Wendi Adelson off at daycare, going to the gym then pulling into the garage of his home on tony Trescott Drive in Tallahassee. He was declared dead at a hospital 14 hours later. Investigators linked the shooting to a light green Toyota Prius rented by Luis Rivera, a leader of the Latin Kings gang, and his friend Sigfredo Garcia. In 2016, Rivera identified Garcia for the shooting and identified Charlie Adelson’s girlfriend Katherine Magbanua as the killers' communication link to Adelson. Magbanua is currently serving a life sentence after jurors in her second trial found her guilty in 2022 on charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation to commit murder. An appellate court upheld her convictions last month. Rivera pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 2016 and was sentenced to 19 years in prison. He testified against Garcia, who police say was the shooter. A jury convicted Garcia in 2019, and he was sentenced to life in prison. A separate jury convicted Charlie Adelson in 2023, and he was sentenced to life in prison. Donna Adelson's lawyers are Josh Zelman and Jackie Fulford of Tallahassee. Assistant State Attorneys Georgia Cappleman and Sarah Kathryn Dugan are prosecuting.
