Dive to the fascinating wreck of the Italian WWII medium-range bomber Savoia-Marchetti SM-79, resting at a maximum depth of 60 meters off Poros. This historic aircraft played a significant role during the Second World War, and its wreck offers a unique glimpse into military aviation history beneath the waves. 👥 Our dives captured here took place on 05/01/2019, with previous explorations on 29/12/2017, 09/06/2018, and 30/11/2019. The wreck was initially located by Noulis Spourlakos, and in 2014 Antonis Grafas and his team documented, photographed, and filmed the aircraft, confirming it as the Savoia-Marchetti SM-79. ✈️ The SM.79, nicknamed "Sparviero" (Hawk), was a medium-range bomber used by the Italian Royal Air Force during World War II. Its distinctive design featured a dorsal hump housing a machine gun, earning it the nickname "il gobbo maledetto" (the cursed hunchback). 🗺️ This particular aircraft, believed to be MM.22293 coded "B2-09," was part of the ANR Torpedo-bomber unit and was lost during a mission on the night of 4/5 August 1944. The crew members—Pilot Ten. Marcello Perina, 2nd Pilot Ten. Gianfranco Neri, Engineer 1° Av. Mot. Marcello Manfrino, Wireless Serg. Marc. Giuseppe Apolloni, and Armourer Av. A. U. Arm. Franco Zanchi—escaped unhurt after ditching the aircraft due to a fuel shortage. 🌊 Our footage captures the well-preserved wreckage, including the intact machine guns, engines, and propellers, which suggest a controlled ditching rather than a crash. The aircraft's fuselage remains largely intact, with the cockpit instruments and wings still visible, offering a rare glimpse into the past. Whether you are a wreck diver, WWII history enthusiast, or technical diving explorer, this dive provides an extraordinary view of one of the Aegean’s remarkable submerged aircraft. 🙌 Support What We Do Thanks for watching! 👉 Love technical diving, underwater exploration, and historical documentaries?
