In British Columbia, the Environmental Management Act prescribes, through the Waste Discharge Regulation (WDR), that certain industries, trades, businesses, operations and activities are prohibited from discharging waste without authorization. This applies to municipal sewage management (listed in Schedule 1 of the WDR). Now that we understand why an authorization is required to release treated sewage effluent, let’s talk about these authorizations! What are they? How do I request or change one?
