The CP 1500 & 1520 classes had probably the longest operational career of any Portuguese diesel locomotive. The 1500 class were 12 ALCo RSC-2 locomotives, built in 1948 by ALCo at their Schenectedy works in New York State, USA. These locomotives were built with ALCo 12-244 engines rated at 1,600 hp. The second batch of 5 locomotives were also built by ALCo in 1951, these being RSC-3s with the 12-244 engine rated at 1,800hp. Aside from the broad gauge bogies and train vacuum brake the locomotives were almost identical to RSC-2 & RSC-3 locomotives delivered for domestic US customers at that time. In the 1970s all the locomotives received major rebuilds which included replacing the original engines with Alco 12-251 engines rated at 2,000 hp. The first 12 locomotives were allocated numbers D.E.101-D.E.112 and later renumbered 1501-1512. The second batch of locomotives were numbered 1521-1525. CP eventually retired these locomotives around 2001 although several have ended up with track maintenance contractors. One is preserved in the Portuguese Railway Museum at Entroncamento. On 25th May 1998 CP 1510 is seen leaving Alvalade at the head of IR870, 06:35 Vila Real Da Santo Antonio-Guardiana to Barriero. Later the same day very shabby looking CP 1507 & CP 1511 are passed at Tunes. On 26th May 1998 CP 1525 is seen at Beja with CP 1801 in the background. Later the same day CP 1512 is heard from the window while leaving Barriero with IR893, 16:00 Barreiro - Beja. Visible on the depot are 1100, 1400, 1800 & 1900 class locos, with the silver painted cab of 1501 visible. A few minutes later 1512 is seen at Pinhal Novo station with the same train to Beja. The station as it is seen here no longer exists, the concrete signal tower, water crane, bridges and platforms have been replaced with a modern steel and glass structure and the lines are now all electrified. In the late afternoon of 26th May 1998 CP 1501 is seen departing Praca do Quebedo with train R3801, 16:35 Barriero - Funcheira. This loco was painted in its original silver and green livery with its original number "D.E. 101" applied. Later the same evening 1511 & 1507 seen again, this time leading and trailing two steam locomotives that appear to be transported toward Lisbon. Not long after 1505 is seen departing Tunes with IR873, 19:35 Barreiro - Vila Real Do Santo Antonio-Guardiana. The next day 1512 is seen leaving Pinhal Novo with IR891, 08:25 Barreiro - Beja.
