A bicycle ride in the Shelbourne Street protected bike lane in Saanich, BC (July 2023). Highlights include one-way quick build protected bike lanes on both sides of the street, a bicycle signal light, updated intersections, updated paint markings and a quick view of Deer (1:24). The work that the District of Saanich has done here is a great example of how painted buffered bike lanes can be converted to protected bike lanes. This video shows the implementation of phase 1 of the Shelbourne Street Improvements Project. Details on future work for phases 2 and 3 can be found in the links below. This quick build protected bike lane provides connections to two other protected bike lanes, retail, restaurants, a grocery store, and residential streets. It can be accessed via McKenzie Avenue at the South end or Feltham Road at the North end (see link below to more videos). We begin today's ride heading North from McKenzie Avenue. As the ride continues we see concrete curbs, bollards, green conflict paint and a treed median. Next, we pass Blair Avenue where we see an updated bike and pedestrian crossing. We will take a closer look later in the video. Further along we pass a connection to the Feltham Road protected bike lane that we will explore in our next video. We continue riding Northbound in the Shelbourne Street protected bike lane to Arbordale Avenue where we turn around and head South all the way back to McKenzie Avenue. The Southbound side of the Shelbourne Street protected bike lane is (at the time of filming) shorter than the Northbound side and begins at Torquay Drive. We then finish the video by using the bike and pedestrian crossing at Blair Avenue. This intersection includes a bicycle signal light, turn box, and crossing button. Length of protected bike lane (approx.): Northbound: 1.4 km Southbound: 920 m Construction completed in 2022 (Phase 1) Contents of this video ---------- 0:00 Intro 0:05 Shelbourne Street protected bike lane (Northbound) 0:30 Treed median 0:40 Shelbourne Street protected bike lane (Northbound) 1:00 Bike and pedestrian crossing 1:10 Shelbourne Street protected bike lane (Northbound) 1:24 A quick view of Deer (on the right) 1:35 Shelbourne Street protected bike lane (Northbound) 1:52 Connection to the Feltham Road protected bike lane 2:15 Shelbourne Street protected bike lane (Northbound) 3:52 Shelbourne Street protected bike lane (Southbound) 4:06 Connection to the Feltham Road protected bike lane 4:25 Shelbourne Street protected bike lane (Southbound) 5:07 Bike and pedestrian crossing 5:25 Shelbourne Street protected bike lane (Southbound) 5:40 Treed median 5:50 Shelbourne Street protected bike lane (Southbound) 6:26 Connection to the McKenzie Avenue protected bike lane 6:37 Bicycle signal light, turn box and crossing button 7:06 More videos Subscribe to this channel: https://youtube.com/@MultimodalExplor...
