The Ministerial Awards for Cardiovascular Research are presented annually at the NSW CVRN Showcase and Awards Ceremony to recognise and celebrate outstanding contributions to research in cardiovascular diseases, including diabetes, stroke and renal disease. The Ministerial Award for Rising Stars in Cardiovascular Research award is open to early and mid-career researchers in NSW, up to 10 years post completion of their PhD, who are already making significant contributions to research in cardiovascular disease and, are considered a “rising star” of the future. As a 2021 award co-recipient, Dr Jelena Rnjak-Kovacina is an exceptional young biomedical researcher with an impressive record of accomplishment at the multidisciplinary interface of biology and engineering. Her cutting edge research is helping us understand the physical and biological signals that drive tissue vascularisation and to replicate these in biomaterials so viable cardiac patches can be developed. Jelena’s research on these cardiac patches has the potential to revolutionise treatment following myocardial infarction.
