Vocal cord polyps should be differentiated from vocal cord nodules. Both of these conditions are seen in the vocal cords. Vocal cords are the structures which produce voice. They are part of the voice box or the larynx. Whenever there is a strain, that can be an acute or chronic strain like you are suddenly screaming or you have infection and you are straining your voice or you have a sudden instance of a mechanical stress in your voice then there is a swelling in the vocal cords. That is called the vocal cord polyp. Most of the times they are unilateral i.e. on one side. They can be bilateral also. Most of the cases the polyps are filled with fluid which in many cases can be bloody and at that time we call it haemorrhagic polyp. Many case you have a vocal cord polyp which is been diagnosed by an endoscopy by a laryngologist. It is imperative that you see an ENT specialist who is an expert in treating all the laryngeal disorders as soon as possible.
