Removing feather cysts from a canary's wing at Bird Vet Melbourne

Surgery in a small bird carries a much higher risk than for a larger bird, mainly because they have less blood. Losing a drop of blood is a big deal when a bird only weighs 17grams! In this video, avian vet, Dr Phil Sacks very carefully removes 2 feather cysts from one of our tiniest patients. The cysts themselves are very much like ingrown feathers. Dr Phil opens them up so that you can see what's inside them. The actual surgery itself is a little longer than what you see here (we've edited out most of the stitching part as that's fairly self explanatory). Our patient meanwhile has recovered nicely and gone home.
