ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- One of Asheville's most historic sites has been sold to help teenage boys struggling with addiction. Highland Hospital, in the historic Montford Neighborhood, is well known as the place where Zelda Fitzgerald died. Now, it will become the home of a substance abuse program. The four-story building, which sold for $1.25 million, has Montford Hall Executive Director Alex Kirby excited. "It was a place where people could come to get well and it's returning to a place where people could come to get well," Kirby said. Montford Hall will be a 28-bed home where teen boys go after they have detoxed from addictive substances. Kirby says there are so few long-term treatment facilities in the country that this program will make a huge difference on the East Coast. "I'm not exaggerating when I say this, you will have to fly across the country to get it." Kirby says he understands there is a risk involved by moving those patients into the neighborhood, but that it was an intentional decision. "Replete with temptation and risk and all the things that come along with being in an urban-suburban setting, because that is where people live. We want to impart to the kids who come here the skills that they're going to need to sustain their sobriety and live their fulfilling lives when they leave," Kirby said. Along with making a big difference, the property comes with a long history. "For us, it's very important because it remains one of the most haunted buildings on campus today," Debra Maddox, Owner of Ghost Hunters of Asheville Tours said. Maddox says she's thankful Montford Hall will maintain the building's historical significance. "When we took equipment inside, you could not take a step in any direction without it going off. So, there's wild paranormal activity here," she said. The site marks the death of Zelda Fitzgerald in a 1948 fire. Since then, employees and service workers have reported ghost sightings and other spooky stories. Maddox doesn't believe they will cause problems for the building's new tenants and it's those stories of healing that Kirby hopes to continue. "It's nice to be a part of a building with history that's integral to the area. In a way, I hope we contribute to that history in a positive way," he said. Construction on the building will be going on for months as crews install showers and a commercial kitchen. The projects were approved by the historical society. _______________ Follow WLOS on social media: WLOS ABC 13 News on Facebook: / news13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Twitter: / wlos_13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Instagram: / wlos_13 Subscribe to WLOS on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ABC13Cha...
