Tournai is one of the oldest cities in Belgium along with Arlon and Tongeren. It had an important historical, economic and cultural role in the County of Flanders during the Middle Ages. Both the civic bell tower of Tournai (Beffroi in French; Belfort in Dutch), the oldest in Belgium, and the Notre-Dame de Tournai Cathedral are included in the UNESCO world heritage list. The cathedral, an imposing construction of Romanesque art and Gothic architecture, is famous for its five bell towers as well as its treasure. Together with the French city of Lille and the Flemish city of Kortrijk, they form the Eurometropolis Lille-Tournai-Kortrijk. The city, created more than 2,000 years ago, has often changed its domain: Gallo-Roman, Frankish (royal city under the reigns of Childeric I and Clovis I and therefore the first capital of France). Around the year 850, it was integrated into the County of Flanders, which became a vassal country of the King of France. From 1187, after the struggles of its inhabitants, the city obtained a certain independence from the rest of the county and depended directly on the crown of France. It remained French until 1521 (excepting a brief English occupation under Henry VIII in 1513). In 1521, the siege of the city ended up passing the latter into the hands of Carlos I, and Tournai thus joined the Spanish Netherlands. Louis XIV conquered it in 1668, but had to cede it to Austria in 1713. From that date on, the city suffered the same fate as the whole of the Austrian Netherlands. In 1745 the battle of Fontenoy (a town located about 10 km from Tournai) took place, with French and Irish victory against the English and Austrian troops. The city was conquered by France under the Revolution and the Empire. It joined the kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815. It was integrated into independent Belgium in 1830.
