Overview of the 2,225-nm (4,120-km) July 2021 race from Point Fermin, CA to Diamond Heat, Oahu, Hawaii. “Time in the boat” is a key metric for success. This was regretfully curtailed due to abridged racing opportunities due to Covid-19 and some unexpected repairs, giving us the equivalent of a half season of preparation over the last 18-months. As a result, our plan to practice in 20-knots or greater winds and sea to stress test the boat was thwarted, resulting in a wet ride to Hawaii. Our elapsed time of 7:08:07:10 d:hh:mm:ss landed us in 4th in ORR Division 3, arguably the toughest division, and 11th overall on corrected time (only 5:20 m:ss out of 10th due to an unforced error of a of an late start due to engine problems). Despite an uncomfortably wet ride, her 9th fastest elapsed time confirmed Fast Exit as one of the fastest yachts on the course, averaging 303-nm/day and 12.6-knots over the 2,225-nm rated course. A review of the Transpac elapsed records over its 115-year history shows: • No yacht in Transpac history had a faster elapsed time than Fast Exit before 2005. • There have only been 70 sub-8-day races for monohulls and 17 of them were this year. Fast Exit recorded the 33rd fastest elapsed time in race history and only 25 yachts had faster races. By the way, some of our best numbers during the race: • Best 24-hour run: 381.6 nm at an average Speed Over the Ground (SOG) of 15.9 knots. • Best 8-hour run: 132-nm at an average SOG of 16.5 knots. • Best 4-hour run: 70-nm at an average SOG of 17.5 knots. • Best sustained top speed: 25.40 knots Her speed validated the decision to move Fast Exit to a wave piercing bow as utilized by the fastest multihulls and newest monohulls.
