Why the Filioque Changed Western Christianity Forever

The Filioque controversy remains one of the most defining theological disputes in Christian history. In this talk, we explore how the Filioque was added to the Creed, why the Orthodox Church rejected it, and how it shaped Western Christianity through papal supremacy, scholastic theology, and rationalism. Drawing on patristic sources, historic encyclicals, and modern Orthodox commentary, this video explains why the Filioque matters and what is at stake for Christian unity. This is the full lecture by Constantine Zalalas from the conference: "On the Eighth Œcumenical Council: The Catholic Condemnation of the Filioque" that took place on March 14 - 16th, 2024 in Lake Guntersville, AL. The original title of his talk was: "The Essence of the Kollyvadic Spirit and Its Significance Today." Mr. Zalalas is an international speaker and retreat master for all Orthodox jurisdictions in the United States and abroad. He holds Masters (with honors) in Dogmatic Theology from the University of Thessalonica. He has published a number of pamphlets and books. His most recent publications include: In Search of the Truth (partnering with St. Anthony"s Monastery in AZ), Volumes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, of On the Book of the Revelation by Archimandrite Athanasios Mitilinaios (fZoe Press), My Exodus from Roman Catholicism by Bishop of Nanzianzus Paul De Ballester and Tears of Repentance by Athanasios Katigkas. Mr. Constantine Zalalas was born on January 30, 1956, on the island of Kos in Greece and while in his early teens, immigrated to the United States with his family. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at Millersville University of Pennsylvania in 1978. Mr. Zalalas is currently a member and a pastoral assistant of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he resides with his family. In 1988, while on pilgrimage to the holy places of Greece, he met Archimandrite Athanasios Mitilinaios, the great elder, teacher and interpreter of the Holy Scriptures. Soon, with the blessing of the Elder, by God's grace, Constantine began translating and presenting the homilies of the elder.
