Riot police standing on street STORYLINE: Several hundred people massed in Bastille in Paris on Monday night to protest against the election of Nicolas Sarkozy as French president on Sunday. Riot police held back the crowd and several arrests were made. AP Television shot footage of smashed shop windows and burned out cars and motorbikes. One man, a Hare Krishna member shouted at police, "because there have been riots elsewhere in France we are not allowed to walk and sing with our children in the street. Is that the kind of France that you want? It will be fun!" After Sarkozy's victory against Socialist Segolene Royal groups of angry youths torched 730 cars and clashed with police on Sunday night in a string of French cities, police said. Sarkozy, a pro-American conservative and an immigrant's son, defeated Royal by 53.06 percent to 46.94 percent with an 84 percent voter turnout, according to final results released early Monday.
