LINX Device for The Treatment of Acid Reflux

The LINX device is an exciting and relatively recent development in the treatment of GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. The device is relatively simple - a small “bracelet” made of titanium beads is wrapped around the esophagus at the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). The ends of the bracelet are secured with a magnetic clasp to assist the LES in closing. The LINX works such that when food passes through the esophagus, the device expands to allow solids and liquids through, then closes to block acid from refluxing back into the esophagus. This is sufficient to control acid reflux in most patients and offers shorter procedure and recovery time than a traditional laparoscopic fundoplication. It can also be used to treat post sleeve reflux in severe cases. The total procedure time is about 30-60 minutes when a hiatal hernia is repaired as well, which is typically the case.
