9/20/25--The Illinois Railway Museum runs its best stuff on Showcase Weekend, and one of the treats out for a tour was the Nebraska Zephyr! One of the famous streamlined trains of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad, this treasure is neat to watch but even more comfortable to ride in! An engineering masterpiece that was clearly worth the hype! The coaches on this train (articulated, so permanently connected) were originally used on the Twin Cities Zephyr; they were reassigned to the Nebraska Zephyr when that train was created in 1947. Several different diesels pulled the train over the years - CBQ 9911A was one of a handful that was painted reflectively to match the silver cars. It was purchased by the museum in 1968, when the museum acquired the coaches. The coaches on this train all have the names of different Greek goddesses (Ceres, Juno, etc.). Another set of coaches assigned to the Nebraska Zephyr were named after Greek Gods. That set was sold to a Saudi Arabian railway in the 1970s and supposedly still exists somewhere over in Saudi Arabia. If someone has a few million bucks to bring that back to the US, that would be a great addition to some railroad museum somewhere! In the meantime, enjoy taking a ride on this one!
