In this episode of Pedal Preservation, I’m bringing something truly special back to life my 1990 Raleigh mountain bike, the very one I received for my 21st birthday over 35 years ago. This bike has never had a single component changed since the day it left the shop, and it’s packed with memories from my early cycling days. After decades in storage (and a few years too many outdoors), time and the elements have left their mark. Join me as I give it a sympathetic restoration keeping the spirit and originality of the bike intact while making it rideable again. From servicing seized shifters and cleaning decades-old grease to regreasing bearings, truing wheels, and fitting period-correct tires, this is a true labor of love for classic cycling craftsmanship. Along the way, I’ll share a few tips, tools, and thoughts on how Raleigh’s bikes once set the standard for quality and why things just aren’t made the same anymore. If you enjoy old-school bikes, proper mechanical work, and a touch of nostalgia, this one’s for you. 👉 Like, comment, and subscribe we’re just shy of that 1,000-subscriber milestone! 0:00 A bike full of memories 2:00 First inspection & plan 3:30 Stripping down & first issues 6:30 Bearings, BB & deep clean 14:00 On Raleigh’s old quality 16:00 Cleaning shifters & small parts 21:00 Reassembly with original details 31:00 Tires, wheel truing & re-dish 39:30 Final cabling & adjustments 54:00 Test ride & closing thoughts
