(4 Sep 2021) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4342512 Mekdess Muluneh Asayehegn is learning to fight. She's one of thousands of Ethiopian Amhara volunteering to take up arms against fighters from neighboring Tigray. It's the latest step in a civil war that has already killed thousands in Ethiopia's northwest. Asayehegn took time off from her job and family to learn weapons training and infantry skills from regional government soldiers. Instead of reading and writing, this school is teaching the art of war. After the two-week training, she returns home and waits to be called up. The Tigray Defense Forces have been fighting Ethiopia's central government since November 2020. The government say they are terrorists. In June, Tigray forces took back the region's capital Mekele and vowed to go after Amhara fighters who had occupied parts of Tigray during the war. In the town of Debark, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Tigray's border, displaced Amhara shelter in a kindergarten and wait for food. Shewaye Mare walked for over a day with her 4-year-old son to get here. The retreating soldiers told civilians to leave with them as they marched south. Even small children made the long journey on foot. With fighters from both sides accused of atrocities, it seems civilians on both sides are preparing to fight back, leaving little hope for an end to the conflict.
