This island is a factory for Toho Chigirijima Smelting, a subsidiary of non-ferrous metals manufacturer Toho Zinc Co., Ltd. Copper smelting began here in 1899, followed by silver smelting, and currently lead smelting. The lead smelted here accounts for over 40% of Japan's lead smelting amount, and is used as a raw material for automobile batteries.
