Do you know that all approaches have been newly classified by ICAO as type A or B? Type A is further divided into a 2D approach and 3D approach, type B only includes 3D precision approaches with vertical guidance, such as classic ILS or GNSS LPV with minima of 250 feet or less. Another novelty can be noted here, too – non-instrument runway suitable for IFR procedure. GNSS has been being used for en-route IFR flights as a primary navigation for some time. Completed with certified advanced SBAS systems – American WAAS and European EGNOS – it ensures such accuracy, reliability and availability of signal that enables to construct approaches independent on ground infrastructure. The thirteenth part of the series named “New SBAS-EGNOS approaches” is a part of series consisting of twenty short videos. It engagingly presents the utilization of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) in aviation and shows its benefits for GA pilots conducting both VFR and IFR flights. However, pilots should also be aware of the limitations of different GNSS systems in order not to compromise safety by over relying on modern technology. The series was produced as a part of CaBilAvi project (http://cabilavi.gnss-centre.cz/) supported by the eighth EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020) under the reference number 641627.
