Chichester Cathedral bells are an 18cwt ring of eight tuned to the key of Eb. They have an interesting reputation, but in person produce a characterful noise to the town and the surroundings. The bells here are hung in the detached tower and not the main cathedral tower due to it being to weak to hold a peal of bells, however they is a service bell hung in a box in that tower that is rung for the service used by a hammer. The bells that hang in the detached tower are cast by a mixed range of founders, these founders are John Wallis, William III Purdue, William I Eldridge and most recently John Taylor and Co. They all produce a characterful noise but are also shrill and badly in tune as well. The bells handle alright if you are used to long draughts but they do need some getting used to! The Cathedral was formally known as the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity. The Cathedral was founded in 1075 when the seat of the bishop was moved from Selsey. It has fine architecture in both Norman and Gothic styles, and has been described by Ian Nairn as ''the most typical English Cathedral''. However, the cathedral has two architectural features that are unique among other English Cathedrals. Most Cathedrals these days have their bells hung either in the main, left or right towers. Chichester stands out as it has a freestanding detached medieval bell tower and also double aisles as well. There are other cathedrals which adopt a detached tower with Chester and St Davids Cathedral coming into mind as well! Chichester Cathedral contains two medieval sculptures, and many modern art works including tapestries, stained glass and sculpture, which most of these were commissioned by Walter Hussey who was dean from 1955 to 1977. Enjoy! Tenor 18-1-12 in Eb https://dove.cccbr.org.uk/tower/10237
