Out of all the different sized striped bass I’ve been lucky enough to connect with, I seem to find the ones that fight the hardest are those fish in the mid-high 30 pound to low 40 pound range. They are just full of piss and vinegar! Now a lot of the way a fight plays out is dictated by the current, how the fish is hooked, and often times this can be overlooked, but the orientation of the fish when it takes your plug. This fish took my Mike’s Custom Plugs Ditch Witch and was perfectly aimed down tide which resulted in some serious string pulling! As time has gone by, and I’ve gained confidence in all the different connections that keep me secured to a hooked fish, and as a result the more aggressively I fight them. Drag is usually in the 11-12 pound range on a setup like the one I’m using, and had I been running 6-7lbs which is probably the average at the canal this fish would have taken me for a RIDE. Also keep in mind this is no noodle stick! Setup: Rod: Custom built ODM Jigster Extreme 11’ 6-12oz Reel: Daiwa Saltiga 6500h w/ 50lb PowerPro Maxcuatro & 80lb Yo-Zuri Topknot Lure: Mike’s Custom Plugs Ditch Witch (Electric Blue head) rigged with BKK 200lb split rings and 6x VMC 7560 Sparkpoint Trebles in 3/0 Waders: Dryft Primo Waders Footwear: Korker Darkhorse with Carbide studs Thanks for Watching Guys. The Canal Bag Series WILL continue after this season is over, and I'm glad I waited because its something that's always evolving.
