Voiced sounds are produced with our vocal cords (also called vocal folds) vibrating. That’s what makes these sounds louder and gives them volume. All vowel sounds (monophthongs and diphthongs) as well as a range of consonants are voiced in English. However, we also have a group of unvoiced consonant sounds in English. We will have a look at both groups with example words. Finally, we are going to have a look at ‘whispering’ as a mode of speaking when vowel sounds are ‘devoiced’.
