While the theoretical use of a protractor in setting up phono cartridges is well documented, most pick-ups come with a recommended VTF range and there are notional ideals for azimuth and VTA/SRA settings, there has been very little discussion of just how these various parameters impact the sonic and musical performance of the cartridge and thus how to really optimize its set up. Follow the rules and you’ll get close, but when performance matters close enough really isn’t good enough. The question is, just how do you take things further? In this presentation we will be showing the differences that each alignment parameter makes to the sonic presentation: not just the difference between approximate and ultra-precise alignment, but the musical difference between different geometries; the affect of tiny shifts in VTF, VTA/SRA and azimuth and how they each affect the sound. In other words, we’ll be demonstrating how to step beyond setting your cartridge by eye and instead set it by ear.
