Mara trees, or known as big-leaf mahogany, is a threatened tree species in western South America. Mara trees can grow up to 50 meters and live for more than a century. The wood is sought-out for high-end furniture production and can sell for high prices on the country’s black market. Now, a Mongabay investigation has found that gangs of armed loggers routine infiltrate Madidi and Amboro national parks and harvest mara trees from deep within their forests.
