Agricultural Biologicals | The Future Sustainability | Farming Inspirations

Biologicals are innovative agricultural products derived from naturally occurring sources like plants and microorganisms with a vision to enhance crop productivity, reduce environmental impact and improve sustainability in agriculture. Biologicals majorly includes 3 main core components 1. Biocontrols 2. Biofertilizers 3. Biostimulants 1. Biocontrols otherwise called biopesticides are naturally derived crop protection products that can be used to control various crop diseases, pests, nematodes and weeds. Biocontrols again fall into four categories 1. Semiochemicals 2. Natural products 3. Macrobials 4. Microbials 1. Semiochemicals are communication tools found in nature which have no killing effect but control. It includes pheromones and plant volatiles. Pheromones are naturally produced by insects for communication and these semiochemicals when applied controls target pests by disrupting their mating process rather than killing them. Nelvium, a product developed by Syngenta uses a mating-disruption technology pheromones to control pests in rice fields. These pheromones emit natural scents which makes males not to recognise its females, thereby reducing the reproduction process in crop fields rather than actually killing them. 2. Natural products include botanicals (derived from plants) and other natural substances which are used in control of various pests. The essential tea tree oil (TTO), a plant extract derived from Melaleuca alternifolia is widely used as a biopesticide to protect crops from various plant-pathogens. 3. Macrobials are nature’s predators that gradually reduce crop pests. They include predators, parasites and nematodes that aid in the control of pests in various crops. Aphids infestation in crops can be controlled by introducing ladybird beetles in fields. 4. Microbials are micro-organisms with pesticide-like qualities which include viruses, bacteria and entomopathogens. Beauveria bassiana is an entomopathogenic fungus that infects a huge variety of insects and is used to control crop infestations by aphids, thrips, and whiteflies. 2. Biofertilizers are microbial-based products which help in promoting the growth of plants by increasing the supply of essential nutrients to the plants. Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (VAM) facilitate nutrient transfer from soil to plants, enhance phosphate uptake, and mobilize immobile micronutrients such as Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, B, and Mo. 3. Biostimulants are substances of natural or microbial origin, that are applied to plants, seeds or the root environment which facilitate crops for enhanced water uptake and nutrient utilization, increased tolerance to abiotic stresses and improved plant vigour, crop quality and yield. Unlike biocontrols or biofertilizers, biostimulants stimulate plant growth and improve overall crop health. Talete, a biostimulant product from Syngenta, when applied through fertigation, interacts with the crop’s physiological process and improves water use efficiency in grape farms. Biologicals, even though not considered to replace synthetically developed products, they do complement each other when used with an effective IPM strategy. Biologicals, when complemented by leading seeds & traits, digital tools, and chemical crop protection measures, can help farmers achieve the best results in their crop fields.
