Bisi Alimi is an LGBT activist and refugee from Nigeria now living in London. In a conversation with Klaus Mueller, Alimi candidly discusses the feeling of "activist guilt" he experienced after leaving his home in Nigeria to live in the UK. The conversation took place during the fifth session of the Salzburg Global LGBT Forum on 'Home: Safety, Wellness, and Belonging' in May 2017. Alimi explains how he learned to accept his new home and understand that he could still contribute to the fight for LGBT rights in Nigeria, eventually sharing these insights with other activists under the same circumstances. He also shares his newfound happiness. "I started my own family in November of last year. I'm married to a wonderful man from Australia who is my husband. For me, it was like that little boy from Nigeria who lived in a country where thinking - just thinking - and discussing the idea of wanting to get married, could land you in jail for 14 years. Just having that experience of looking into the eyes of this gorgeous man and saying 'I do' was like living in a fairytale really." The Salzburg Global LGBT Forum was formed in 2013 to establish a truly global space to reflect upon and advance the LGBT and Human Rights discussions around the world. Its signature is the international representation of leaders from diverse fields - including human rights, legal, artistic, and religious backgrounds. Founded and chaired by Dr. Klaus Mueller, the Salzburg Global LGBT Forum currently connects representatives from more than 70 countries (as of May 2017).
