Lio, 2 year old Appy/BC mix with multiple triggers, one of which being people with crutches. After having taught both Lio and Tina "hand-touch", which will be used for various purposes as well as the cue "Where is the man?" (Uf Schwiizerdüütsch), we review the basic work we did in the first session. This is a Graduated Exposure Technique based upon Arthur Bandura's Observational Learning/Social Learning. It's called "Participant Modeling" as the caretaker models and interaction with the trigger for the dog who watches. One sees in this video, an excerpt from the FA, then the baseline behavior for this 2nd session, which still shows some distance increasing behavior. I should note, that Lio's much better to shift his attention to the "touch-hand" when cued. We also see a marked reduction in distance increasing behavior after the first trial of modeling. Empowerment play a central role in this. Lio learns that he is asked if he wishes to interact with the trigger, but also, that "retreat is always an option". So both engage and disengage are reinforced. Lio and Tina are both superstars. After this, we move on to men with cases (music instruments, briefcases) as well as strange dogs.
