Explosions shake Kobani as warplanes fly over Syrian border town

(9 Nov 2014) A powerful explosion rocked the Syrian town of Kobani on Sunday as Kurdish fighters continued to clash with militants from the Islamic State group. The explosion was filmed from Mursitpinar, on the Turkish side of the border with Syria. Several other explosions could also be heard on Sunday afternoon. The area has witnessed fierce fighting between Kurdish peshmerga soldiers and Islamic State group extremists as both sides vie for control of the town also known by its Arabic name, Ayn Arab. The US has assisted the Kurds with airstrikes. More than 1,000 people have been killed in the battle of Kobani, including 609 Islamic State militants, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The toll also includes 363 fighters from the Kurdish militia known as the YPG, as well as 24 civilians and more than a dozen Syrian rebels.
