This scenic descent gains roughly 300 m in elevation, with gradients reaching up to 30 ‰, passing through 13 major engineering structures—tunnels, viaducts, and stone works—dating to the line’s inauguration in 1907. Departing from Puget-Théniers, the locomotive winds through forested slopes, crossing dramatic terrain sculpted by centuries of natural erosion and railway ingenuity. The route threads its way through the Var valley, weaving curves and gradient changes before delivering passengers into the heart of Annot, a picturesque mountain village nestled among towering rock formations and dense woodland. Operated by Chemins de Fer de Provence (the metre-gauge “Train des Pignes” line), the steam version of this heritage route is run by the Groupe d’Étude pour les Chemins de fer de Provence (GECP) and operates seasonally on select Sundays and special dates from May through October.
