Johannes Brahms was 44 years old when he discovered the Chaconne of Bach in 1852 and immediately wrote a transcription for the solo piano as a study. Brahms, writing to his dear friend and muse, Clara Schumann said: “ On one staff, for a small instrument, Bach writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings. If I imagined that I could have created, even conceived the piece, I am quite certain that the excess of excitement and earth shattering experience would have driven me out of my mind” The left hand of the pianist, like the left hand of the violinist have a similar configuration and this was the reason Brahms transcribed it for the left hand. Bach wrote the powerful Chaconne in 1720. This Chaconne is a tombeau, a memorial piece for his wife, Maria Barbara, who died unexpectedly while he was traveling. The Chaconne is also a a dance, but here it’s a dance of grief.
