SIMONE BENEVENTI - percussion DAVID LANG Scraping song (1997/01) for solo percussion Version with wooden percussion. --- Live shooting at SONIC TEMPLE STUDIO Parma (August 2019) by Giacomo Volpi, during the recording session of the Album WOODEN SONGS (Stradivarius 2020) ----- "Scraping Song composed in 1997 and revised in 2001 by David Lang was dedicated to Steven Schick. The piece is based on two guiding principles: a musical performance by Schick on the Zyklus by Karlheinz Stockhausen on which were elegantly set various güiros, and the recording of an arrangement of “Music for Airports” by Brian Eno. The latter was performed by the group Bang on a Can, of which both Lang and Schick were part, and it involves a very creative use of a disk brake. The title, Scraping Song, incorporates all these inputs, from the use of extra-european instruments in contemporary composition (as demonstrated in 1958 by Stockhausen) to the unconventional transformation of everyday objects into musical objects. Beneventi and artisan Bussi’s version is played on a percussion set previously composed by 4 bells or similar objects, 4 recycled metal scraps, 4 güiros and a rock bass drum. These instruments have been substituted by 4 small wooden boards (similar to Simantras, a Greek Orthodox percussion instrument), 4 wooden blocks of different cuts and qualities, a South American pedal cajon and 4 handmade güiros. The güiro’s grooves are replaced by small pieces of wood and are organized from high to low pitch and have different size sounding boxes. Idiophones imply intervals. These intervals are part of an hypnotic dance that is suggested in the piece. This piece has a modal structure of a pentatonic sort (lacking a tone) that suggests a dance like character. The musical weave develops in a minimal fashion by varying a series of patterns that entwine and unravel during a three voice polyphony that is very complex to perform. In the background we can hear a texture that evokes refined Balafons, typical of Sub-Saharian West Africa suspending the piece in time and space."
