Once, I thought that being alone meant being haunted by my thoughts and my longing for things I had lost but never left me. The idea that frightened me the most was a line from The Book Thief which says “I am haunted by humans.” It made me feel empty without someone beside me. But I’ve come to realize that loneliness can be a very beautiful thing when you know how to hold it gently. It’s about being whole within yourself, while accepting that sometimes you will have more, and other times, nothing at all. So here I am, surrounded by the things I love, in a city I still struggle to understand yet love the most, no dramatic highs or crushing lows, just stillness, calmness, and peace.
